FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK:

3rd Sunday of Lent - Year C

On the Third Sunday of Lent each year, the first reading comes from the book of Exodus.  In this C year, Moses discovers God in the burning bush and comes to know that he is standing on holy ground, the ordinary—but much transformed—place of his daily work.  This and other readings designated for today and for the next two Sundays may be set aside in favor of the A-year readings which focus on the baptismal themes of water, light, and life.

Taking the A option is especially appropriate in assemblies celebrating rites called scrutinies with the elect who are preparing for baptism at the Easter Vigil.  These scrutiny rites, celebrated on the Third, Fourth, and Fifth Sundays of Lent, are meant to discover and heal anything sinful that may remain in the hearts of the elect and to uncover and strengthen that which is good.  Even if we aren’t RCIA candidates ourselves, we can all take the opportunity to scrutinize ourselves to rid ourselves of any “vestiges” of sin so that we may deepen our Baptismal commitment and move further on the road to conversion.

This bulletin insert was written by Marion Eagen, a liturgist and musician in the diocese of Scranton, Pa. © 2002 Resource Publications, Inc., 160 E. Virginia St. #290, SanJose, CA 95112, (408) 286-8505. All rights reserved.

Third Sunday of Lent

Based on the writings of St. Francis DeSales

Today's readings speak to the catechumens who are preparing for baptism.  The Scriptures reveal how God cares for those who, like Moses and the Samaritan women, have faith and hope in the Word of God and live it. St. Francis de Sales notes: "Moses' faith in God's Word allowed him to use his rod to make water flow from the rock.  Attentiveness to God's Word is necessary to sustain us in our responsibilities in this world.  Our entire good lies in accepting the truth of God's Word and persevering in it. In the Eucharist we are nourished by the Divine Word made flesh."

We need to grow in God's Word. Even outside of your prayer, keep yourself as if you were in prayer.  Renew yourself throughout the day with thoughts of God's infinite goodness. Good reading, too, helps the heart come alive and gain new strength and vigor.

Yet, we also ought to nourish and strengthen the divine word by opening our hearts.  We must remain attentive and reflect on what God has to say to us in the depths of our hearts.  We must digest the divine word so that it becomes a part of us in such a way that we are nourished and strengthened by it. Then, like Jesus, we will put our words into action.  We will carry out what we are taught, discerning carefully the needs at hand.

Our Savior desires that we have great confidence in Divine Providence.  All who trust in God always reap the fruits of this confidence.  Our Savior takes tender care of those who have a great willingness to abandon to Him their weariness and anxious care of advancing in holiness.

We may question whether we will always have the will to please God during our entire life.  Alas!  There is nothing so weak and changeable as we are.  So let us frequently place our good intention before the Lord, who will strengthen our willingness as often as is necessary, so that we have sufficient determination to live God's Word in this life.  (Adapted from the writings of St. Francis de Sales)

NOTE, NOTE, NOTE:  Daylight Saving Time begins this year on Sunday, March 14.  The Saturday Mass will move to 5:00pm beginning Saturday March 20.

For your information:  Snow removal for the Church grounds, school grounds and cemetery for the months of January and February cost:  $455.00

Why do they say that?  Ladies wore corsets, which would lace up in front.  A proper and dignified woman, as in “straight laced” wore a tightly tied lace.

Common entertainment in the early US included playing cards. However, there was a tax levied when purchasing playing cards but applicable to the “Ace of Spades.”  To avoid paying the tax, people would purchase 51 cards instead.  Yet, since most games require 52 card, these people were thought to be stupid or dumb because they weren’t “playing with a full deck.”

Have a joyful Lent!

April 9, 2001

Hey, did you know there is a tuition reduction program right here at Sacred Heart School to offset the cost of your tuition? It is called SHIP (Sacred Heart Incentive Program).

How it works is you buy gift certificates to the stores that you already shop at. These stores sell them to us at a discount, and the discount goes right towards your child's tuition. It's that easy! We do all the bookwork and pay your money accumulated right towards your tuition annually. All's you have to do is shop!

If you have just enrolled your child to begin next year, you have to get started now. Because the money you save this year goes towards next years tuition. If you hurry, you can still reduce your tuition by a good margin for the upcoming year.

To give you a head start, and to let you see how easy the program really is, we are going to give you an extra 1% on all of your orders placed for the rest of April. That's three weeks worth of bonus! don't worry all of you regular customers. You'll get the extra 1% too. Spread the word on how easy this program really is, and how much it's benefited you.

If you have any questions, or want to know more about SHIP, please call the school office during school hours at 448-6405, or call the rectory during office hours at 448-3811.

P.S. Grandmas and Grandpas can also buy certificates and the savings will be credited towards your grandchildren. Don't have a child attending Sacred Heart School? Well, we've got you covered too. There is a general church fund, a general school fund, and a general scholarship fund that you can credit your savings to.

SPIRITUAL ADOPTION PROGRAM

Everyone loves the beauty and innocence of a baby.  As an expression of that love, Sacred Heart announces an adoption program for young and old alike.

The members of Sacred Heart parish family will have the opportunity next weekend to “spiritually” adopt a child who is newly conceived this month.  Not all newly conceived babies are allowed to be born.  In fact, more than 4,000 babies lose their lives to abortion each day.  It is these babies you are being asked to “adopt”.

You may “adopt” a child individually or as a family by signing up during the weekend of March 13-14.  You will be asked to name the child for whom you will be praying, thereby giving the baby the humanity he or she deserves.  You will be asked to pray for your unborn child and for all unborn children, for the power of prayer is great.

You will receive monthly reports through the parish bulletin describing your baby’s development and your child will be born in December.

There are millions of unborn babies desperately in need of your prayers.  Won’t you please “spiritually adopt” one and share the love for life that God have given you?
